This course offers a well-rounded survey of AI for non-technical government staff. It provides an overview of AI and Generative AI fundamentals; examines the use of AI tools and co-pilots for expediting and automating common workplace tasks; presents AI applications in data analysis and visualization, and introduces other AI tools for image and media generation. The course combines lectures with demonstrations.

Course Outline

Building AI Skills for the Non-Technical Government Workforce

Morning Session (4 hours)

Introduction to AI for Government (0.5 hour)

  • What is AI and Generative AI

  • Understanding the potential and limitations of AI in non-technical roles

  • Overview of AI ethics, accountability, and public trust

Generative AI for Workplace Efficiency (1.5 hours)

  • Using AI tools like ChatGPT and other copilots for:

    • Writing emails, reports, and meeting summaries

    • Drafting policy documents and creating templates

  • Live demonstration:

    • Automating routine tasks with AI

    • Creating structured documents from unstructured inputs

  • Hands-on exercise: Participants draft a policy memo or response using a Generative AI tool

AI in Data Analysis and Visualization (2 hours)

  • Simplifying data interpretation with AI tools (Google Sheets AI, Tableau GPT, Power BI Copilot)

  • Hands-on demo:

    • Analyzing a dataset and creating visualizations using AI assistance

    • Automating charts, dashboards, and insights generation

  • Discussing limitations of AI in data accuracy and bias

Afternoon Session (4 hours)

Exploring AI for Image and Media Generation (1.5 hours)

  • Introduction to AI tools for image and media creation (DALL·E, Canva AI)

  • Applications for presentations, training materials, and citizen engagement

  • Live demo: Generating images, enhancing designs, and creating short videos with AI tools

  • Hands-on exercise: Participants create visuals for a public awareness campaign

Responsible Use of AI in Government Settings (1 hour)

  • Importance of ethical AI usage in public service

  • Case studies: Misuse of AI and lessons learned

  • Establishing guidelines for responsible AI use in daily tasks

Wrap-Up: AI Skills for the Future (1.5 hours)

  • Recap of key concepts and tools introduced during the course

  • Group discussion: Identifying tasks in participants’ roles that could benefit from AI

  • Q&A and brainstorming session: How AI can enhance government services

  • Final activity: Participants outline a simple AI adoption plan for their teams
