In an ongoing effort to build a data driven culture, Legg Mason recently partnered with UMBC Training Centers, the professional and technical skills subsidiary of the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), to create a customized pilot training program for employees focused on data and analytics. The pilot program included 40 employee participants.

“Providing opportunities for employees to accelerate their knowledge and application of data and analytics in their daily work routines is essential to fostering a data driven culture.” – Chief Human Resources Officer

The program offers two certification tracks – Business Analytics and Advanced Analytics – and employees span various functional areas with representation from across the organization. The nine-month program, which includes four multi-day sessions, covers topics that align with specific business needs, including:

Business Analytics Certification Track:

Advanced Analytics Certification Track:

  • Python for Data Science (5 Days)
  • Machine Learning & Visualization with Python and AWS (4 days)
  • Machine Learning & Analytics with Apache Spark and AWS (4 days)
  • Advanced Topics in AI and AWS AI Tools (4 days)

Participants are praising the program:

“Bringing together analytics professionals from all functional areas has been amazing. This cross functional class will help form the core of our Legg Mason Analytics community going forward.” – Chief Data Officer, Legg Mason Technology

“The program has been a great opportunity to further develop my knowledge of data analytics and discover synergies with other departments around the firm. In the first session, Intro to Cloud, AWS, and Data Analytics, one of the most beneficial aspects of the class were the collaborative Legg Mason use case discussions. We were able to recognize pain points across the company and understand where and how data analytics could add value to the business.” – Program Coordinator, Affiliate Strategic Initiatives

“The training has been a valuable opportunity for me and my team to elevate our collective skillsets in areas like data visualization, data science and machine leaning. As the Global Business Intelligence team continues to grow our capabilities in these competencies, the combination of classroom style learning and hands-on experience has proven to be incredibly useful. The ability to experience the training simultaneously across our partners in areas like LMT and Product has also been helpful in generating new ideas for potential use-cases.” – Head of Global Distribution Business Intelligence

“It has been validating to learn that Excel – a tried and true app for the average business user – has similarly evolved and is relevant even in the world of cutting-edge data science. In just a few days I learned skills – like Power Query – that my team and I immediately applied to achieve meaningful efficiencies with multiple processes involving large data sets.” – Solutions Services Manager, Human Resources

“This training will enable Global Product to adopt a data-driven, proactive process to initiate business decisions and ultimately lead to a tactical approach to product strategy and management. Given the practical methods learned, I believe that we are ready to employ machine learning and other predictive analytic tools to analyze business drivers and to ascertain competitive positioning and features for our products.” – Product Manager, Global Product

“The instructors at UMBC Training Centers equipped me with foundational data analytics knowledge that has already impacted the work I do in my current role. My favorite portion of the course was learning efficient ways to visualize data and how to choose the best way to communicate the story within a data set. I am so grateful to have participated in the course and hope to continue building on the knowledge and skills I learned.” – Risk Analyst, Audit & Risk Management
